The holiday season is over, but winter is still here.
With low temperatures and unpredictable weather, it’s easy to spend the next few months sedentary and secluded. But regardless of the season, seniors should remain busy. This chases away the winter blues while also maintaining an active body and mind.
Need some help getting started? Here are five ideas for winter activities for seniors.
1. Join A Book Club
In addition to being fun, reading has been shown to increase brain connectivity. Joining a book club takes this benefit to the next level. Instead of simply reading for enjoyment, you are hearing and discussing different ideas. It’s also a great way to connect with others.
If you’re unable to find an existing book club near you, create your own. It can be as easy as choosing a friend, picking a book, and then scheduling a time to discuss. If transportation is difficult, you can also consider a variety of online book clubs.
2. Explore Your Creativity
Everyone is at least a little creative. Experimenting with different artistic outlets keeps you mentally sharp while also having the potential to uncover talents you never knew you had. Even if the end result will never hang in a museum, there’s a well-earned sense of accomplishment when you create.
Pottery. Painting. Creative writing. Adult coloring books. There are opportunities for all interests and ability levels. Your creations also have the potential to become great gifts for loved ones.
3. Start An Indoor Garden
Gardening isn’t just a warm-weather activity. You can put your green thumb to work all year. Even if you’re a novice, there are a variety of different plants you can grow without ever stepping outside.
In addition to potentially providing fresh vegetables, taking care of plants introduces a cadence to your week. Water them, position them to get enough sunlight, and enjoy watching them grow. After all, it’s nice to add a little green to your life when everything outside your window looks dreary.
4. Stay Physically Active
When temperatures drop, it’s common to put physical activities on hold. But this prevents you from enjoying all the benefits that movement offers. According to the CDC, exercise for older adults reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It also improves mood and overall feelings of well-being.
Staying active doesn’t necessarily require breaking a sweat. Walking is an excellent exercise that also allows you to socialize. Even if mobility is limited, there are numerous chair exercises to keep your body engaged.
5. Look For Community Events
No matter where you live, chances are there’s always something happening nearby. Card tournaments, live music, and local theater are all examples of activities that help get you out and about. It’s just a matter of finding what piques your interest.
