How To Practice Gratitude As A Senior

Senior writing in a gratitude journal

Around the holiday season, families often gather at the dinner table and share what makes them thankful.

But there’s no reason to limit this reflection to a single season. It can be part of your daily routine. Research has shown that gratitude can help people:

  • Deal with adversity
  • Improve their health
  • Build stronger relationships
  • Feel more positive emotions

Practicing gratitude is the intentional, consistent habit of acknowledging what sparks joy and appreciating what you have. Although this can be helpful for anyone, it’s especially important for older adults.

As we age, life changes become inevitable. Health may decline. Family dynamics may change. Independence may erode.

Rather than dwelling on the negatives, gratitude helps shape a more positive, appreciative mindset. There is no singular way to practice this habit, but here are several ways to get started.

Write It Down

Writing in a journal, even if it’s just a few minutes per day, helps you express yourself and reflect. It’s also effective. Consistent gratitude journaling has been shown to increase optimism by 5% to 15%.

Fill The Jar

Get in the habit of writing down a few things you’re thankful for each day. Then drop that slip of paper in a jar. Not only will you have a visual reminder of your gratitude, but you’ll have something to read on rough days.

Take A Picture

Keep your phone handy and take pictures of the people, things, and opportunities that make you happy. You can then reflect on the week by swiping through the photos. This practice helps train you to look for the bright spots in life.

Send That Thank-You

Gratitude is something you can share with others. One of the simplest ways is to send thank-you notes. The reason can be big or small, but this practice also helps strengthen your relationships.

Gratitude And Assisted Living

Where you live plays a huge role in shaping how you look at the world.

For adults 55 and older who need extra help, but don’t want to give up their independence, an assisted living community is an excellent option.

Just remember that they’re not all the same.
