What Is The Difference Between Assisted Living And Nursing Homes?

As you consider what’s next for your loved one, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all the options.

Senior living. Assisted living. Nursing homes.

Although phrases like this are often used interchangeably, these sorts of facilities are not the same. While exploring your options, it’s important to know what makes each one unique.

The biggest differences between assisted living and nursing homes tend to fall into several different categories:

Level Of Care

The primary difference between the two is the level of care.

Assisted living communities strike the balance between support and independence. Residents can receive help when needed, such as with activities of daily living (ADLs). However, they’re also encouraged to socialize, remain active, and get out into the local community.

Nursing homes, on the other hand, typically provide around-the-clock care. Residents tend to have more serious health issues or disabilities that require frequent attention.

Rooms

Assisted living communities tend to provide private apartments that feature a kitchenette, bedroom, and bathroom. This enhances the feeling of independent living.

It’s common for nursing home residents to share a room with someone else. The housing also tends to look more like a hospital room than an apartment.

Daily Life

All assisted living communities offer scheduled programming. Residents have opportunities to keep their minds and bodies active. Walking paths, book clubs, and birthday parties are all great examples.

Due to health concerns, nursing home residents often do not have the same opportunities. Residents tend to spend the majority of the day in their rooms.

The Cost

Another significant differentiator is cost.

Based on 2021 data from Genworth, the median cost for an assisted living facility in Indiana is $4,283.

This is considerably lower than the cost of $7,270 for a nursing home facility. This total is for a semi-private room. For Hoosiers who want a private nursing home room, the monthly cost is $8,720. Keep in mind that these are median numbers. The cost of skilled nursing near you can be much higher.

These totals do not factor in any financing options such as Medicaid.

The best way to find the perfect community for your loved one is to see it in person. With nine convenient locations across Indiana, you can find the Silver Birch locations nearest to you and schedule a tour.
